The characters of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World united in Jurassic World Dominion

Jurassic World Dominion director, Colin Trevvorow, wants to move away from film franchises in the future. Trevvorow is an American filmmaker who has written and/or directed each Jurassic World film in the trilogy. Additionally, he was the original director for Lucasfilm’s Star Wars 9, before he left the project over creative differences and was replaced by J.J. Abrams. The Jurassic World series is a sequel to the Jurassic Park trilogy which first premiered in 1993. While the series centers on two new characters – Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard)Jurassic World Dominion welcomed back original Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum.

The Jurassic World trilogy was released between 2015 and 2022. All the films have received fairly mixed reviews, however, each has boasted enormous success at the box office. The franchise is beloved enough to draw audiences to the theaters, but its longevity and ties to the original Jurassic Park trilogy might draw more scrutiny from audiences. After all this time, Trevorrow is ready to leave Jurassic World and pass the baton to the next filmmaker with an idea for stories in that world. Despite his experience with franchise filmmaking, it sounds like Trevorrow isn’t looking to jump to another property any time soon.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Trevorrow was asked what’s next for him following the wrap-up of the Jurassic World trilogy and he revealed that he wants to move away from franchises going forward. He simply wants to create a story that doesn’t already have a legion of fans behind it. After all, it is a very delicate process to expand on stories that truly made up one’s childhood. He’s ready to move on from always being in the shadow of these two franchises. Check out his statement below:

I’ve learned something every day. For me, I’ll be honest, [it’s] being able to potentially make something that doesn’t have a legion of people to whom it’s deeply personal. Because I’ve been in that space on two different franchises for eight years of my life now, and it seems even movies that I’ve made that weren’t about either of these were still kind of in the shadow of which franchise I was attached to.

[I’m ready] to be able to tell stories in a way that hopefully doesn’t have people’s childhood in its hands—because I’m one of those people; I understand it. It’s a very delicate thing to be working with, the way we felt when we saw a movie like Jurassic Park when we were nine years old.

Blue and Beta in Jurassic World Dominion

Trevorrow’s statement gives insight into the pressure that comes with working on a pre-established franchise. As he states, today’s Jurassic World Dominion audiences might’ve been just 9-years-old when they saw Jurassic Park. Now, as adult audiences they may want Jurassic World to give them that same childhood experience that first made them love the franchise. Of course, this isn’t always feasible as the franchise now has new directors, new actors, and new writers, and the entire filmmaking process is vastly different from what it was almost three decades ago. Jurassic World, Star Wars, and other franchises come with an enormous fan-base, all of whom have very high expectations, demands, and emotional investment in franchises. Trying to make a film for new audiences and old audiences, balancing what everyone wants, certainly is no easy feat.

Meanwhile, it’s not just that Trevorrow must contend with a pre-existing fan-base when working on Jurassic World, but also that he’s always associated with the franchises. Even when he works on a different, unrelated project, he’s always in the shadow of his best-known works. While it’s not a bad thing to be known for being involved in a big film franchises, it’s understandable why he’d want to make his own, original mark as a filmmaker in Hollywood. It remains to be seen what projects Trevorrow will embark on now that Jurassic World Dominion has premiered, but it will be intriguing to see him tell some new stories that don’t encompass audience’s entire childhoods already.

Jurassic World Dominion is now available on 4K, Blu-ray, and Digital with a special extended edition.
