Nirvana Were Set To Replace Drummer With Grunge Legend

Author Robert Boyd sale Dan Peters from Mudhoney was going to be Nirvana’s official new drummer after Chad Channing, but Dave Grohl took the gig.

He told Booked on Rock, “There were overall seven drummers, including Dave Grohl. They went through a series of drummers up until the recording of ‘Bleach,’ including Dan Peters of Mudhoney. Kurt Cobain… Largely Kurt Cobain — he had become tired of Chad Channing. He wanted a harder drummer, someone who hit harder. They were great friends and, from what I understand, remained great friends, Chris and Kurt with Chad Channing, throughout the remainder of the band. But they just wanted a drummer that hit hard.”

“So, in the spring of 1990, Chad was asked to leave the band,” Boyd continued. “And it was at a pivotal time, because they had some major label interest, ‘Bleach’ was selling well, they had just finished a European tour and the North American tour. So, Chad left the band, and they had few options. So, both Dale Crover and Dan Peters stepped in to help out. And Dan Peters of Mudhoney, even though Mudhoney was on hiatus at the time, assumed that he was gonna get the role. He was gonna be Nirvana’s new full-time drummer.”

“But completely coincidentally, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic attended a Scream show in California. Dave Grohl was the drummer of Scream, a punk band out of Washington, DC. And soon after that particular show, Scream disbanded. So, Dave Grohl, needing a new position, was pointed in the direction of Nirvana. And the rest is history.”
