During a new interview with Kerrang Radio, Dave Grohl revealed that he once wrote a song for Ozzy Osbourne, but after the Black Sabbath frontman passed on it, he kept the riff for himself.
“Sharon [Osbourne] was, kind of, calling out to different people to see if they wanted to help write songs with Ozzy,” the Foo Fighters frontman recalled.
“And so I wrote this instrumental that was, like, super heavy. It was almost like a Melvins song, it was super duper heavy. And I thought, this could be so cool if Ozzy sang over it,” he continued.
“And they never picked it. They never used it. But I wound up using it for this record that I made. It was called ‘Probot,’ which had different vocalists on every song. And the singer of a band called Trouble [Eric Wagner], a legendary metal band called Trouble, he sang on that track and it almost kind of has an Ozzy vibe to it.”
“It never became an Ozzy song, but it has a killer riff, man,” he added.
The riff eventually became “My Tortured Soul,” featured on Grohl’s heavy metal side project “Probot.” Released in 2004, the album featured a long list of collaborators, including Motörhead frontman Lemmy, Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, Max Cavalera of Sepultra, Jack Black, and many more.
