MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Brie Stoner’s “Like A Man” Video

With its soothing SoCal groove, “Like A Man” is Brie Stoner’s unhurried pep talk for all the “creative, busy, driven and fulfilled” heterosexual women out there.

“It’s my cheeky complaint about looking for a man I can call my wife,” she says.

Stoner is a passionate generalist—a multicultural, multilingual songwriter, vocalist, visual artist and author who grew up in Madrid and now lives a far-from-ordinary Midwestern life in Grand Rapids, Mich. Available October 11 and produced by Father John Misty guitarist David Vandervelde, Stoner’s Like A Man EP (Label51) delves into her extended—and formative—stay in Los Angeles. It’s a teaser for a full-length coming sometime next year.

“It feels like most men I’ve dated lately have this concept that they need to be the protagonist and are looking for a supporting actress for the movie of their lives,” says Stoner, who makes it clear that she’s through with that role. “In the video, I play every instrument in the band to communicate that I’m fulfilled. I don’t need a backing-band man, nor am I willing to be the backing-band woman. There’s plenty of symbolism in there, but it still comes off as light and playful, just as the song is.”

We’re proud to premiere Brie Stoner’s “Like A Man” video.
