Henri Cash and Sophia Skye have the sort of indie-rock pedigree that generates excitement. Cash plays guitar for Starcrawler, the glam-punk outfit fronted by Arrow de Wilde, daughter of award-winning photographer/director Autumn de Wilde and drummer Aaron Sperske (Beachwood Sparks, Lilys, Father John Misty). Skye is the daughter of Rilo Kiley bassist Pierre de Reeder and did quite a bit our touring with her dad as a youngster. (Skye still has a scar from England’s Glastonbury Festival, where she faceplanted in the mud and cut her lip.)
Skye and Cash’s creative alliance began as a lark but has continued over seven years. “Pasadena Girls” is the latest single from their debut LP, Just A Stranger (Little Record Company), which is set for release February 21. Some of the music came out of recording sessions they managed between touring, college classes and day jobs. For other songs, they were joined by members of Starcrawler, whose enthusiastic-yet-sympathetic accompaniment helps Cash & Skye nail the Nashville-by-way-of-Laurel Canyon vibe.
Cash & Skye’s twangy ode to their hometown takes on a certain poignancy considering the recent California wildfires, which took their toll on parts of Pasadena.
“Being born and raised here, I have a lot of love for my hometown,” says Skye. “There are a lot of cultural cornerstones we’re known for—like the formation of Van Halen or being the first place Michael Jackson ever moonwalked. And there are some things people don’t know about us quite yet.”
We’re proud to premiere Cash & Skye’s “Pasadena Girls.”
