MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Kit Major’s “Garbage Planet” Video

“At the time, I was listening to a lot of bright, vintage rock for inspiration—like the Pixies, Sonic Youth, the Romantics, the Pretenders,” says Kit Major, offering some context for the rambunctious “Garbage Planet,” the latest single from her self-released EP, Love.Sick.Major., available October 25. “It’s a blend of post-punk energy and big guitar riffs.”

Now based in Los Angeles, Major bounced around quite a bit growing up, living in Chicago, Tokyo and Beijing. From the sound of “Garbage Planet,” she seems most closely aligned with New York City and the seminal CBGB acts of the late ’70s and early ’80s. Major found inspiration for the song’s title and lyrics from her fifth room-cleaning session of the week.

“I was in a place that felt very messy internally—and my external environment matched,” she says. “I knew the song had a grunge whine to it. A couple of Guitar Center drum lessons later, and I’d figured out the map of the song musically by drumming.”

Next came the “spill your guts” voice memo to producer Alex Flagstad. “He’s an incredible guitar player, and he knows I welcome big guitar moments in anything I write,” says Major.

We’re proud to premiere the video for “Garbage Planet.”
