MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Susto Stringband’s “Never Losing Me”

Of all the life changes Susto’s Justin Osborne has navigated in recent years, parenthood tops the list. “As a touring musician, I’m always coming and going, and it can be tough to balance work and family life,” says Osborne. “I wrote ‘Never Losing Me’ for my daughter—who was three at the time—as a message she could reflect on later in life. Now, as a father of two, it’s a way for me to feel close to them every time I sing it.”

Speaking of life changes, Susto Stringband: Volume 1 (New West) drops March 28. Produced by Ryan Stigmon at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville, N.C., the album is a collaboration between Osborne and the homey North Carolina bluegrass/Americana outfit Holler Choir. Though seven of its nine tracks are reworked Susto tunes, “Never Losing Me” was written by Osborne specifically for the project.

“The song fits perfectly with the bouncing whimsy heard in old-time music across the country,” say Holler Choir’s Clint Roberts. “The melody Justin came up with reminds me of records I grew with on idyllic Sunday mornings in Appalachia, driving on narrow, winding country roads.”
