John Sykes, the esteemed British rock guitarist renowned for his contributions to bands such as Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, and Blue Murder, passed away on January 20, 2025, at the age of 65 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on July 29, 1959, in Reading, Berkshire, England, Sykes developed an interest in guitar at the age of 14, inspired by Eric Clapton. His early career saw him joining the band Tygers of Pan Tang in 1980, contributing to their albums Spellbound and Crazy Nights.

In 1982, Sykes joined Thin Lizzy, playing on their 1983 album Thunder and Lightning, which was the band’s final studio album before their initial disbandment. His dynamic guitar work added a fresh intensity to the band’s sound during their concluding chapter.

Sykes’s tenure with Whitesnake began in 1984, where he played a pivotal role in the band’s evolution. He co-wrote and performed on the 1987 self-titled album Whitesnake, which achieved eight-times platinum status and featured hits like “Still of the Night” and “Is This Love.” Despite the album’s success, creative differences led to his departure from the band.

In 1989, Sykes formed the hard rock group Blue Murder, serving as both guitarist and vocalist. The band’s self-titled debut album showcased his versatility and solidified his reputation as a formidable musician.
