Wet Leg justify the hype with Nashville show—review

On Monday (March 14), Wet Leg gleefully ripped through a dynamic set at The Basement East in Nashville, Tennessee.

Although the duo, made up of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, make music for people who like to stay in, fans showed up in droves for this performance.

The line of people eagerly waiting to get into the sold-out performance wrapped around the building. The show was originally scheduled to take place at another venue called The Basement but had to be moved to the larger venue.

With only five songs released thus far, it’s natural to wonder, “Where did all these people come from?”

One person recalled first hearing Wet Leg on SiriusXM, while another said they heard them on 91.1 WNXP, a local radio station. A few DJs from the station were also in attendance.

Two friends drove from Kentucky just to see the band after one shared a Wet Leg music video with the other. Another person was also referred to the band by a trustworthy friend. When they heard a song, they thought to themselves, “CSS [an indie band from Brazil] is back!”

Presumably, they could all sense they were witnessing the start of something big.

Wet Leg took the stage around 9 p.m., with Teasdale wearing a Third Man Records baseball jersey she got while visiting Jack White‘s record store earlier in their trip to Music City.

Despite having released their first single less than a year ago, the energetic crowd sang tracks such as “Wet Dream” and “Oh No” back at them with a die-hard fervor.

The joy the duo feel while performing was palpable as the two beamed at each other across the stage and twirled in perfect coordination.

Toward the middle of their set, Teasdale addressed the crowd, politely saying, “It’s very nice to be here.” The crowd roared back “Welcome to Nashville!” By the end of their performance, Teasdale said she felt like she was “giving a Miss Congeniality acceptance speech.”

They tore through their entire discography in the roughly hour-long set. In addition, they gave a preview of what fans can expect from their upcoming debut album, which will be out April 8.

Wet Leg closed the night with “Chaise Longue,” which arguably got the crowd the most hyped. Fans headbanged along, singing, “I got the big D!”

In the end, everyone walked away to the sounds of George Michael‘s “Careless Whisper” happier — and probably much sweatier — than they had arrived.
