In a new interview, noted anti-Christian provocateur, Metallica superfan and Behemoth frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski addressed the topic of women’s rights in relation to recent bans on abortion in Poland and the United States, standing in support of women. Appearing on the Hardcore Humanism With Dr. Mike podcast, Nergal told host Dr. Mike Friedman that it’s not a topic addressed enough in metal.
“Hardly anyone in the metal scene talks about women’s rights. I know it’s a chauvinistic genre, and even talented and beautiful women that are very successful, they get a lot of shit from men, or are not being treated equal, which is absolutely wrong, because some of those women… Like for example, Alissa [White-Gluz] from Arch Enemy that we’ve just toured with, she’s got bigger balls than most of metalheads that I know and I’ve met and she’s probably even stronger and braver than I am, being a man.
“Women’s rights, what just happened in the U.S. a few weeks ago, and Poland, and abortion laws and stuff… If you are open-minded and if you’re about equality — you don’t need to be socialist to think that way — but women deserve their rights, same as men. And it still feels like there’s a massive imbalance in between.
“We need women. We love women. I love women. And I appreciate them. I appreciate my mom and everyone’s mom and I appreciate my lovers and my fan females.”
Last year, Nergal made incendiary comments about legislation banning many forms of abortion in Poland, echoing a similar sentiment regarding gender equality.
Earlier this year, Nergal was acquitted of blasphemy in his home country. It was the latest instance in a repeated history of such charges for the vocalist, the other most recent instance being in 2018.
Behemoth’s newest album, Opvs Contra Natvram, is currently awaiting a September 16 release on Nuclear Blast. You can listen to the two previously-released singles—“Off to War!” and “Ov My Heculean Exules”—now.
