Triumvir Foul – “Flesh Diocese”

This unholy, sloppy mess of anxiety comes from Portland’s intriguing Vrasublatat imprint championed on Anthony Bartkewicz’s “Grave Convulsions” Gimme show. Fetid in its presence, reckless in its execution, this blast of death sounds like someone’s playing multiple records in a cave, and the disorientating elements are pretty mind-boggling.

Razor – “Flames of Hatred”

A sick fuzz drone intro flanked by a group chanting the band name, a channel switch and bam, off to mayhem with this power-thrash slab of greatness from guys who were there in 1989. From what it sounds like, their fearsomeness has not relented, their upfront bark and scrambling instrumental section whooping up a storm. It’s sharp as a tack, and to celebrate their first LP Cycle of Contempt (first in 25 years!) Razor hit the Gimme DJ decks with a special on September 28!

Black Anvil – “Castrum Doloris”

After a top tier run of live dates this summer and lots of cred in their bag after tours with Mayhem, Watain and Urfaust, the Anvil continues to do NYC proud as premiere purveyors of modern black metal. Crystal clear production stakes their terrain of doing up the genre their own way, the samples scattered on this track making a statement of coloring outside the lines of what’s expected. Punchy and powerful, ‘Regenesis’ lands on Season of Mist on September 22 and we can look forward to more dates in November with Cannibal Corpse, Dark Funeral, and Immolation.

Kollaps – “Hate Is Forever”

Wow, a hissing intro, chattering robot drums and some disembodied voice growls from above over a cyberattack of grunting percussion, industrial samples and creeped-out atmosphere. Kollaps hail from Australia and Until the Day I Die finds a suitable home on the UK post-industrial Cold Spring label. Neubauten-esque elements like raw metal, cement mixers and broken hardware click scissor-sharp into the controlled mix, the array of effects and edits making your head spin.

Hellfire Deathcult – “Grand Invocation Ov Black Death”

On Al Nombre De La Muerte this Chicago legion exhale the sooty air in their skeletal corpses right into your face with a low-end thrush of gargled vocals and deep-black grind. It’s a relentless, savage attack of the senses.
