DEFTONES Is “Coming Up With Ideas” For A New Album

According to Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter in an interview with Cypress Hill vocalist B-Real’s The Smokebox show, the band has begun talking about the follow-up to their 2020 record Ohms. “[We’re] getting ready to [work on new material]. Just coming up with ideas at this point, more conversation at the moment than actual doing.”

While this is great news, the real question here is who’s going to end up playing on the new album? Bassist Sergio Vega announced earlier this year that he had parted ways with Deftones sometime in 2021, and has been filled in for live by current Heavens Blade bassist Fred Sablan. Deftones has also been employing second guitarist Lance Jackman (Eightfourseven, Horseneck, ex-Will Haven) live, and even as their main guitarist in place of Carpenter during a recent European trek. There’s no word on if Sablan or Jackman are planned to be permanent members of the band, or if they’ll play on the new record.

In the same interview, B-Real also briefly brought up the desire to bring back his band Kush with Carpenter. For those unfamiliar, Kush was the aformentioned duo alongside former Fear Factory members Christian Olde Wolbers and Raymond Herrera. The band originally formed in 2001 and, despite playing some shows and promising a debut album, Kush remains inactive.

Deftones also recently annunced they’re bringing back their Dia De Los Deftones festival this year. The festival will take place on November 5 at Petco Park in San Diego, CA and will feature Turnstile, Phantogram, Freddie Gibbs, Audrey, Destroy Boys, Provoker, and Cold Gawd.
