The long road to new music from sludge metal supergroup Down seemingly has an end in sight. The group’s latest full-length effort, “Down III: Over The Under“, arrived all the way back in 2007. Meanwhile their most recent output, the two-part series of “Down IV” EPs, concluded back in 2014.
Since then, the group have been met with various setbacks, including blowback from vocalist Phil Anselmo‘s infamous white power salute in 2016, the pandemic that followed, the resurrection of Pantera eating up much of Anselmo‘s time, and the aural output and touring of the various bands Down‘s roster also play in.
New material from the group began to gel earlier this year, with the outfit having penned roughly seven new songs back in late March. In a new interview with That Metal Interview, guitarist Kirk Windstein (also of Crowbar, etc.) revealed that number of songs is now up to 10. He said of that and the group’s tentative plans for next year:
“I’ve been in Down world [for the last few months] kinda, writing with Down and finishing up the writing for the album that’s [gonna come] out next year at some point… We’ve got 10 new songs, man. It’s awesome.”
