- Doctor Fate’s Powers In Black Adam Explained By Pierce Brosnan
Black Adam star Pierce Brosnan explains the helmet-derived super powers sported by his classic comic book character Doctor Fate.
Black Adam star Pierce Brosnan explains his character Doctor Fate’s powers. DC Comics antihero Black Adam is finally making his way to the DCEU with Dwayne Johnson in the role. Johnson’s god-like character will be joined in the Black Adam movie by several members of the Justice Society of America, including Kent Nelson aka Doctor Fate.
Black Adam of course exists in the DC Universe as a main enemy of Shazam, who has already made his way to the DCEU. But Johnson himself reportedly pushed for his take on the Black Adam character to not be included in the first Shazam! movie and instead receive his own standalone introduction. So rather than battle Zachary Levi’s Shazam, Black Adam will instead make his DCEU debut opposite such long-awaited characters as Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Cyclone and the aforementioned Doctor Fate. The Doctor Fate character is of course a DC classic, having first arrived in the pages of the comics way back in 1940.

Bringing a classic character like Doctor Fate to the DCEU is of course a very big deal. Thankfully Black Adam has a strong and experienced actor in Brosnan taking on the role. Speaking to Total Film (via GamesRadar), Brosnan briefly touched upon his Doctor Fate powers and talked a little about how his character’s helmet was designed, revealing that he was allowed to give input into the way the pivotal headgear looked. Brosnan said:
“He has powers to foresee the future, and raise the dead, and teleport, while wearing a gold helmet. … It’s a blessing and a curse. It’s almost like a drug addiction in some respects. It takes a lot of energy to wear the helmet. It was a very beautifully designed outfit and helmet, which I’m quite fond of. [Director] Jaume Collet-Serra is very inclusive in the collaboration. He was wonderful in the sense that he would send me designs of the helmet, so I could participate in the look of it.”
In the pages of DC comics, Doctor Fate’s many magical powers derive from him being given a gold helmet by the god Nabu. Speaking recently about the decision to cast Brosnan as the movie version of the character, Black Adam director Collet-Serra spoke to the actor’s ability to play such a super-powered hero without getting carried away. “You need a special actor to play, basically, a legend,” Collet-Serra said. He added, “Doctor Fate is a very powerful being, so you need someone like Pierce who can play powerful without it being overly done.”
Brosnan obviously is someone who mastered the art of looking strong while playing cool when he took on the role of James Bond for four movies. It seems that Black Adam’s version of Doctor Fate will be somewhat more complex than 007 however, as the character grapples with the curse of being given a helmet that affords him super-powers. It remains to be seen of course if long-time fans of the legendary Doctor Fate are ultimately happy with the way Brosnan and company bring him to life in Black Adam. But it seems everyone involved was very conscientious in attempting to realize a comics-faithful and fan-pleasing version of the long-time character.
