Technical difficulties can be frustrating and sometimes dangerous for the Below Deck Mediterranean cast, and the stabilizers on the motor yacht Home are proving to be season 7’s villain. Below Deck Med producers like to focus mainly on the crew members and the charter guests. The engineers and first officers are mostly out of sight and are not part of the Below Deck cast. However, sometimes they make an appearance on the show when something from the boat malfunctions and affects the crew.

During Below Deck Med season 2, the anchor chain got tangled into a massive knot overnight. As bosun Wesley Walton surveyed the mess, he admitted to not knowing how to fix the situation. Unfortunately, it happened during a charter, and Captain Sandy Yawn couldn’t move the boat until the chain was untangled. Wesley and deckhand Bobby Giancola worked for hours to get the chain fixed, but eventually, their hard work paid off.

When Captain Sandy returned for Below Deck Med season 7, she admitted that Home was a brand-new boat and that she had never been the captain on it. During the first charter, the stabilizers abruptly stopped working, rocking the boat violently from side to side. The crew scrambled to stop glasses and plates from breaking while the charter guests looked worried. Eventually, the chief engineer managed to get the stabilizers working again and explained that they are hooked up to the boat’s air conditioning system and will fail if the system shuts off.
Captain Sandy explained to Below Deck Med fans that “stabilizers are fins that stop the boat from moving side to side.” When they malfunction, the waves cause the yacht to rock back and forth, which can be a dangerous situation. The stabilizers proved to be a problem, yet again, in the most recent episode of season 7. The alarms on Home started blaring as the boat became unstable during the charter. As Carlos, the engineer assessed the situation, he determined that the air conditioning system was being overworked and advised Captain Sandy to keep all the doors shut moving forward.
With the Below Deck crew informed of the solution, hopefully, there will be no more malfunctions in season 7. Chief stew Natasha Webb confessed that something similar had happened in her previous charter boat and was traumatized by the experience. She recalled the yacht tipping over and being trapped inside. Thankfully, nobody got hurt on motoryacht Home, and the Below Deck Med crew and guests were able to laugh off both incidents.
Below Deck Mediterranean airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo.
