EVANESCENCE’s AMY LEE Thinks New Fans Should Listen To Band’s

In a recent interview with Revolver, Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee was asked if there was a song in the group’s catalog that closest defines who they are as a band now. “It wouldn’t be from the first album. I feel like we got better after that,” she said.

This may come as a surprise to some, given Evanescence‘s debut LP Fallen and the title-track single were so mega-successful that it thrust Lee—most deservingly, of course—into the limelight. Still, that’s just not where Lee’s head is at these days.

“I know it seems weird to pick something off our new album (last year’s The Bitter Truth), but I think I would,” she continued. “I think it’d probably be maybe the first track off the new album, ‘Broken Pieces Shine.’ I feel like that encapsulates something thematically and lyrically that is very us. There’s something about being the different ones, about being the broken ones, about being the people who have been through something. Those are our people.

“And saying, not only am I willing to expose that vulnerability in myself — I’m hurt and there’s something broken. But also, I don’t wish that I didn’t have that. I’m going to wear my scars proudly and I’m going to wear my tears as a badge of honor. I don’t want to forget the pain, I want to use the pain. I think there’s a lot of all that in that song where, for me, it’s like, this is what Evanescence is.

“And I think it’s a great song musically, as well. The way that it kicks in, I put a lot of thought into that intro. Like, this is gonna be us coming back with our first music that’s the rock stuff, first all-original album since 2011—we need to come back with who we are. Something about the feeling of getting back up again after being knocked down so many times and climbing back up out of that hole, I think that song is a good encapsulation of Evanescence.”

Lee and Evanescence will be back in the loving embrace of their people this summer when they hit the road on a co-headlining tour with Korn. You can catch all of those dates below.
