Point Break 2’s latest single was inspired by a late-night trip to the ER after a bike accident.
“It was kind of the experience of being hazily conveyed to and fro in some rideshare cabs in NYC,” says frontman Ted McGrath. “I originally thought the tune would be a small, quiet interstitial about finding some optimism and keeping a sense of humor and grace in the face of, well, everything these days—almost kind of a lullaby.”
Then the rest of Point Break 2 got their hands on it.
“Once I showed it to the band, it became something much grander—and much better,” says McGrath. “It rips.”
The first release from the Brooklyn quartet’s recent sessions with producer Jeff Berner (Psychic TV), “Haunted Car” finds Point Break 2 moving past its proto-punk and surf-rock sound into the richer, more cerebral territory of influences like the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music and Wire. For the accompanying video, the band enlisted Daniel Bellury and James Gannon, whose Wrecked A Buncha Cars, Had A Good Time chronicled a weekend at an amateur demolition derby. The filmmakers returned to unused footage from that project, assembling a belated muddy companion piece to their 2024 documentary short.
We’re proud to premiere Point Break 2’s “Haunted Car.”
