When I created an initiative to get free Mecca Normal CDs into classrooms, I wasn’t counting on the professors I contacted to ask me for additional material to give the music and its “freeness” some context. Sheesh. It kinda felt like homework. I just wanted to connect the dots from 1980s DIY punk to students facing societal demise, to nudge those on the verge of melding activism and creativity to take that next step.
